Hi Sean,

I haven't read the book myself, but perhaps Leonard B. Meyer's book Emotion and Meaning in Music would be of help and would contain bibliographic resources that might be of interest.

Best wishes,
Cynthia

Cynthia,

That was fast!

I was afraid you would ask that. I suppose the definition is what I'm pursuing, but in the context of art. My workaday definition of sentimentalism in this context is something that exists to call people into emotional states for that sake only, with nothing beyond. Emotion for emotion's sake.

Thanks

Sean

Hi Sean,

Would you specify what you mean by sentimentalism?

Best wishes,
Cynthia

Dear Ms Nielsen,

I recently stumbled on your blog and was pleased to read excerpts and your comments on Nichols' book as well your entries on Maritain and Bulgakov, and the essay you posted at another site entitled "What Makes Music Beautiful?" These things suggest to me you might be able to answer a question of mine.

I am interested to find out if anything has been written on art and sentimentalism, broadly understood -- possibly from a theological viewpoint, but not necessarily so.

Please excuse me if this seems intrusive in any way.

Cheers,

Sean

Cynthia, I head the business thing. My profs keep shoving more books my way, so between family, reading, classes, AND constantly looking for the best price on all these books, it's been hectic. I should clarify, however, that I'm always a big fan of accumulating a bottomless pile of books.

Hi Dan,

Things have been busy this week with school, work and family, but I hope to read your post on de Lubac this weekend.

I haven't read the new Begbie book, but I am definitely a fan of his. Do let me know if you write up a post on his new book.

Best wishes,
Cynthia

Cynthia, thanks for the posts on Nichols. I was very much interested to see how where he would end up. Although I can say I'm entirely happy. I've probably read too much Wolterstorff to be content with any theory of aesthetics that emphasizes expression over participation and/or action. I wonder if you've read the article by Jeremy Begbie in the newest Books and Culture. I hope to get around to writing about it this week.

Also, as you were following my series on Lubac's "On Christian Philosophy", I finally managed the time to finish the series. Last post here.

Kindest regards,

Dan
